Portraits of love

"Never before have I been so moved by a painting."

when she’s not there anymore

Who was grandma? While she searched the hundreds of photo’s on her telephone my mother started to fret more and more: “No, that’s not her… No, here the background is weird… No, this one is too dark… and there she is to young… no… no… no.”

How do you remember someone who’s not there anymore? Someone who maybe hasn’t been there for even a longer time?

A life through lines on paper

The moment I pick up my pencil something changes. While the lines slowly grow in a portrait I start to see. Really see: The subtile light in the eyes, lips that twitch waiting for that big smile just under the surface, a lock of hair slowly moving in a light breeze…

While I draw and paint I slowly touch a life, bring it out to show it to the world.

When my mother saw the portrait of my grandmother she said, with tears in her eyes:

”Yes, yes, that’s mom; who she really was.”

For angelparents too

Yes, the mother told me, she did indeed have a photo. But the picture was to raw to just show to other people. If I could maybe, maybe want to draw her little loved ones?

With tears in my eyes I have seen her twins. The curve in the lips of the girl, the little snub in the nose of the boy. I’ve seen them, acknowledged their lives, their individuality, told the world they are real.

Now their parents can finally share them, frame and treasure their likeness. See, there they are, their sweet little children.

This is the most special gift someone ever gave to me.
